TautFlex Air

TautFlex Air is a ready-to-use airbrush paint developed for artists, signwriters, custom apparel decorators and commercial applicators who need reliable adhesion across a wide range of surfaces. Based on the proven TautFlex paint system, this water-based coating has been formulated specifically for airbrush, conventional spray and HVLP applications.

TautFlex Air is a multi-surface airbrush paint that bonds to flexible and semi-rigid materials while maintaining excellent flexibility. The coating moves with the substrate, which helps to minimise cracking, peeling and premature wear.

This paint delivers a durable, high-gloss finish with excellent scratch resistance for both interior and exterior applications. You can also easily adjust the gloss level using a matting agent when a satin or matte appearance is preferred.

TautFlex Air is ready to spray straight from the bottle and comes in convenient 250ml easy-pour bottles fitted with integrated glass mixing balls.

Airbrush Paint for Flexible and Difficult Surfaces

TautFlex Air was developed for applications where conventional paints often struggle. Its flexible formulation provides strong adhesion to materials commonly used in signage, automotive detailing, apparel decoration and creative projects.

Suitable surfaces include:

  • Vinyl banners and signage
  • Tautliners
  • Canvas
  • Leather
  • Rubber
  • Tarpaulins
  • Marquees
  • Furniture
  • Seats and upholstery
  • Blinds
  • Luggage and bags
  • Shoes
  • Magnetic sheeting
  • Paper
  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Suitably primed rigid surfaces

TautFlex Air is not recommended for use on corflute, polypropylene or acrylic surfaces.

Airbrush Paint Colour and Finish Options

TautFlex Air offers flexibility beyond substrate compatibility. The range includes 14 intermixable opaque colours, plus black, white and clear options, allowing users to create custom shades without compromising performance.

For specialised effects, the TautFlex paint system also includes:

  • Transparent colours when mixed with UV Clear
  • Fluorescent colours for high-impact graphics
  • Metallic gold and silver finishes
  • Pearlescent silver concentrate for shimmer effects

Fluorescent colours perform best when applied over a white basecoat.

Application Instructions

Using TautFlex Air is designed to be straightforward and hassle-free as long as you follow the instructions below:

  1. Before you begin, shake the TautFlex Air bottle for at least 30 seconds to ensure a consistent mixture.

  2. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the recommended air pressure for application. TautFlex Air can tolerate higher pressures for fine results.

  3. Apply thin coats, allowing approximately 5 minutes of drying time between each. This prevents sagging and ensures a smooth finish.

  4. For a protective finish and uniform gloss, apply a final coat of TautFlex UV clear. It's available in gloss and can be adjusted with a matting agent for your desired finish.

Please note: When painting a large area, it is recommended that the original TautFlex or TautFlex DIY be used as the background colour, and that TautFlex Air be used for the detailed work.

Durable Finish Without Heat Setting

Unlike many fabric and flexible surface coatings, TautFlex Air does not require heat setting. Once cured, the airbrush paint forms a water-resistant coating that remains flexible across a range of applications.

For additional UV protection and long-term exterior durability, apply a final coat of TautFlex UV Clear. The coating is also compatible with professional two-pack polyurethane and acrylic urethane clear coats where a higher-build or automotive-style finish is required.

Airbrush Paint Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean equipment immediately after use to prevent paint build-up. TautFlex Air can be cleaned using:

  • Water
  • Viponds Prep Vinyl
  • Methylated spirits

For stubborn residue, soak components in Prep Vinyl before flushing through the equipment.

FAQs

What makes TautFlex Air different from standard airbrush paints?

Traditional airbrush paints are often designed for specific substrates or require additional additives to improve flexibility and adhesion. TautFlex Air is a ready-to-use flexible paint that adheres to a wide range of surfaces without the need for complex mixing. Its formulation remains flexible after curing, helping reduce cracking and peeling while also minimising tip clogging during application.

Can TautFlex Air be used as paint for vinyl?

Yes. TautFlex Air was specifically developed to provide excellent adhesion to cast and calendered vinyl. It is suitable for signage, banners, vehicle graphics, promotional displays and other vinyl-based applications.

Do I need to heat-set TautFlex Air on fabric or canvas?

No. TautFlex Air does not require heat setting. Once cured, it forms a durable coating that remains flexible and water-resistant. For exterior projects, a coat of TautFlex UV Clear is recommended to maximise longevity.

How quickly does TautFlex Air dry?

Under normal conditions above 16°C with low humidity, TautFlex Air becomes touch dry in approximately 2–5 minutes. Thin coats and adequate airflow will help achieve the fastest drying times.

Can I create custom colours with TautFlex Air?

Yes. The stock colours are fully intermixable, allowing you to create custom shades and effects. Transparent finishes, metallic effects and pearlescent finishes can also be achieved using compatible products within the TautFlex system.
